Accessibility - Neil Jarvis & Darren Wood - Tuesday 31st July

Neil Jarvis is the Adaptive Technology manager at the Royal new Zealand Foundation of the Blind. He has worked in the field of adaptive technology for nearly 20 years, firstly in the UK and, since 2004, here in New Zealand. One of his team’s jobs is to advise organisations, Government departments, private-sector businesses and others on accessibility of software applications and internet websites.

During the presentation, Neil will talk about how accessibility and usability are linked and how failing to make a site accessible guarantees its poor usability. He will demonstrate techniques which which make the difference between accessable or inaccessable, and talk about the pitfalls to avoid.

Neil will demonstrate how a blind person using a screen-reader navigates websites, and show examples of good design and poor design from that perspective.

Darren Wood is a web developer, interface designer and web geek. He’s a member of the Web Standards Group and an advocate of accessible, semantic HTML. He’ll be talking about best practices when it comes to front-end web development, Web Standards, accessibility, semantic markup and CSS.

  • Location: Bank of New Zealand, 3rd floor, 125 Queen Street, Auckland (Map)
  • Late entry: Call Don Gibbons on 029 241 3804 if you have difficulty getting in or arrive after 6.30pm

Compelling Experiences - Lou Carbone - Thursday 9th August

In an increasingly generic world, where customers are fickle, margins are thin and profits are elusive, managing compelling experiences can make all the difference. That’s the message author and internationally acclaimed speaker Lou Carbone drives home. Lou Carbone has been exploring the dynamics of experience creation and management for over 20 years.

Lou is the author of Clued In and this year’s keynote speaker at TechEd

  • Location: Microsoft, Level 5, 22 Viaduct Harbour Ave, Westhaven (Map)
  • Late entry: Call Nigel Parker 021 499 535 if you have difficulty getting in or arrive after 6.30pm

Interaction Design - Phil Fierlinger, Xero - Tuesday 28th August

Phil Fierlingerwill be talking about and showing the interaction design process used to create Xero (an online business accounting software created by Rod Drury, 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year). He will provide some insights into the different design techniques used to build a complex online application quickly, yet effectively. He will also discuss how those techniques are evolving as the company and the software grows.

  • Location: Bank of New Zealand, 3rd floor, 125 Queen Street, Auckland (Map)
  • Late entry: Call Don Gibbons on 029 241 3804 if you have difficulty getting in or arrive after 6.30pm
